What is the difference between HDD and SSD hard drives? Well, first we should check what are they actually and then you will have a complete idea of picking the right one for your PC.

As you know, the hard drive is a key component of a computer that plays a vital role in storing and retrieving information. These Hard Disks can store many files such as documents, music, videos, images, etc.

What is HDD and SSD?

Hard Disk Drive (HDD) is introduced in 1956. HDD makes use of magnetic storage media for storing data. It is used to store data on a rotating platter with a read/write head floating above that spinning platter.

Hard disk drives are in use for several decades, as they offer good performance and safety features. But due to the introduction of high-end fast processing computers, the operational capacities of HDDs were lagging the required capacity.

HDDs come at a low cost and can store larger amounts of Data. A computer with a 1 TB (TeraByte) HDD costs around the same as a similar computer that has a 128 GB (GigaByte) SSD.

SSDs are more expensive than HDDs. Any SSDs that are over 512GB are beyond the price range of most people. But, on the other hand, HDD having large capacities such as 1TB/2TB available for low budget prices. But, buying SSD means you are having a faster and far more durable data storage option.

Due to moving parts in HDDs, the longer we use the more chances to end up failing. It might happen due to shock and damage as well.

As you know SSD has no moving parts, and it is a non-mechanical design of flash storage that is mounted on a circuit board. And SSD is free of overheat issues, so no need for a cooling fan, which results in less power consumption. Also, SSDs provide better performance and reliability and keeps your data safe compared to HDDs.


HDDs makes noise as it must spin back and forth to access the data you need. Both internal and external HDDs also makes noise. Sometimes it might make a little louder noise too. When it comes to SSD, due to its flash memory it makes no noise at all.


As I mentioned earlier, no moving part means no heat, that makes your data in SSD more safe and secure. So, it is recommended to keep SSD as your main storage option, and you can keep other less important data in HDD on the same computer.

How to move files from HDD to SSD

Step 1: Prepare your system

Connect your new/old hard drive to your system, depending on how and why you are migrating. To connect hard drives to the computer, there are plenty of options, but the best one is SATA Cables.

Find a free slot on your motherboard to plug the drive (using SATA Cables which looks like in the below picture) into and a spare power cable coming from your SMPS (power supply) and you should be up and running. On the other hand, an external SSD can be connected using a USB connection or any other simpler option.

Now to move Windows installation files to an SSD, we need to separate the data such as documents, pictures, music, videos to another disc as these are not part of OS files and it shouldn’t be transferred to your new SSD due to less space(128 GB).

If you can afford in buying high capacity SSD such as 500GB/1TB, then you can transfer all your data from old drive to new one.

And, using the Windows cleanup tool, clean all the junk files too such as temp files, recycle bin data, and any previous windows installations that you don’t need, etc. You can find this tool by typing in the Windows search bar with its name and then click on the respective link. Usually, this process should be completed in less time.

The best way to move Windows 10 or any other OS from HDD to an SSD is by using a cloning tool. This tool copies everything on the old drive and pastes it onto your new SSD.

Step2: Install data migration tool

In Windows, there are no tools to clone or transfer your operating system to a new hard drive. But this can be done by using 3rd party apps. In general, all these apps have the best cloning functions that can be useful in moving Windows 10 OS from an old drive to a new SSD. Below are the best tools that I recommend.

AOMEI Backupper Standard: It is the best backup solution that people are using for a long time, and it is one of my best choices for taking the data backups and cloning data, etc.

In this case, I’m going with the AOMEI tool. So, let’s consider what you have downloaded, and the AOMEI tool. Now it is time to take a backup of your entire data to a separate external hard drive or to a cloud backup service using this tool.

Why Data Backup? Because, if something goes wrong, then we shouldn’t lose our data.

Backup Process may take some time to complete, once it is done then we can move on to the migration procedure.

Step 3: Migration Process

Now open your cloning application and look for the option to Migrate/Clone OS to SSD/HDD. It should open a new window the detect the drives that are connected to your system and ask you for a destination drive.

Choose your destination drive, which is your new SSD and make sure it has enough space.

Once you can see all the hard drives detected in Windows 10, then Select the HDD where your Windows 10 OS resides and click “Next”.

Now choose a destination drive to migrate your Windows 10 to SSD and click “Next” to proceed.

Note: As we have done for HDD data backup, do it for your SSD drive as well. If there is any data in it. Because you cannot access the from it as the partitions on the SSD will be overwritten.

Click on the “Start” button which will start the migration process. By the way, if the destination drive has been used before, then you will have the option to delete partitions on it. You may do it if you want, but If you are not sure about it, then better delete the partitions.

The tool also provides you an option to resize the partitions on destination drive when they migrate over. Choose the right one to fit and optimize partitions to the new drive.

If all good, then proceed with the final step. Sometimes, the migration process may take much time. Once it is done, restart your system and check everything works as expected.
